Round bar: kg per metre = diameter² × 0.006165, with the diameter in mm. Square bar: side² × 0.00785. Flat bar: width × thickness × 0.00785. Example: a 20 mm round bar weighs 2.466 kg/m, so a 6 m length is 14.80 kg, and a 50 × 10 mm flat weighs 3.925 kg/m.
The formulas
Steel weighs 7850 kg per cubic metre. For a bar with a constant cross section, the weight of one metre is the area in square metres times 7850. With sizes in millimetres this reduces to short constants:
Round bar: kg/m = d² × 0.006165Square bar: kg/m = a² × 0.00785
Flat bar: kg/m = width × thickness × 0.00785
The round bar constant is 7850 × π / 4 ÷ 10⁶ = 0.006165. You will also see it written as d² / 162, which is the same thing rounded.

Using the chart for a price
Take the kg per metre from the chart, multiply by the length and the number of pieces, then by the rate per kg. For example, 20 pieces of 16 mm round bar, each 6 m long, at an example rate of ₹70 per kg:
1.578 kg/m × 6 m × 20 = 189.4 kg × ₹70 = ₹13,255If the rate is quoted per tonne, divide it by 1000 first. ₹70,000 per tonne is ₹70 per kg. For the full method, including what an estimate leaves out, read the guide to steel weight and cost. For rebar in particular there is a shorter rebar chart, and for plates see the plate weight chart.
Checking a size that is not listed
Use the formula above, or open Steel Table India, choose Flats or Round and Square Bar, and type your own size. The app recalculates mass, unit cost, area and section properties from the geometry at 7850 kg/m³, at your own rate per kg. Remember that these are theoretical weights. Bars as delivered can differ a little from the chart because of rolling tolerance.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate the weight of a round bar?
Square the diameter in mm and multiply by 0.006165 to get kg per metre. A 20 mm bar gives 20 × 20 × 0.006165 = 2.466 kg/m.
How much does a 12 mm MS round bar weigh per metre?
About 0.888 kg per metre, so a 6 m length weighs about 5.33 kg and a 12 m length about 10.65 kg.
What is the formula for the weight of a flat bar?
Multiply width in mm by thickness in mm by 0.00785 to get kg per metre. A 50 × 10 mm flat gives 3.925 kg/m.
How many metres of 16 mm bar make a tonne?
About 634 metres, since a metre weighs 1.578 kg and 1000 ÷ 1.578 is about 634.
Are these weights exact?
They are theoretical weights at 7850 kg per cubic metre. Delivered bars differ slightly because of rolling tolerance, so the supplier table and weighbridge figure govern an order.
