What does a hiccup mean? The sweet belief that someone is remembering you

Almost everyone grew up hearing it: if you get a sudden hiccup, somebody far away is thinking of you.

The short of it

In many Indian homes, and in many other places too, a sudden hiccup is a little sign that someone is remembering you. It is a folk belief, not science. Hiccups really come from a small muscle spasm. But the belief has lasted because it makes distance feel smaller, and that is the idea Hiccup the app is built on.

The little belief we all grew up with

You are sitting at the table and a hiccup arrives out of nowhere. Somebody says, without looking up, "Someone is remembering you." Then the guessing starts. Is it your mother? Your friend from college? That person you have not spoken to in months?

Nobody believes it completely, and nobody quite stops believing it either. It is one of those small family sayings that sits between a joke and a hope.

"Kaun yaad kar raha hai?"Who is remembering me?

What really causes a hiccup

The plain answer is less romantic. A hiccup is a quick, involuntary squeeze of the diaphragm followed by the voice box snapping shut, and that is the "hic". Eating fast, a cold drink, a laugh that went on too long, or a bit of excitement can start one. Most hiccups pass within minutes.

If hiccups ever last for a very long time, that is a question for a doctor, not for folklore. Hiccup the app is about warmth, not health advice.

Why the belief stays with us

Because it answers something we all feel. When we miss someone, we also wonder: do they miss me back? We rarely ask it out loud. The hiccup belief lets the question be answered by the body, with a smile and no awkwardness.

It also turns a random little moment into a connection. For a second, the person far away is in the room.

A hiccup you can send on purpose

Here is the thought that started our app. What if you did not have to wait for the body to do it? What if you could send somebody a hiccup, a tiny, warm "you crossed my mind", and it simply waited on their phone?

That is Hiccup. You pick a small Bu Bu character, a feeling, an emoji or a few words, and send it. It does not ask for a reply. It only says: I remembered you today.

Small ways to be someone's hiccup today

You do not need a reason. Being remembered is the reason.
