Shared expense tracker for group trips: what to look for, and no sign-up

Everyone paid for something, nobody wrote it down. What a good shared expense tracker should do on a group trip, and how to start with no account and no email.

Short answer

A good shared expense tracker lets everyone add expenses on their own phone, marks who shares each one, keeps private items private, shows balances from each person's point of view, settles up in the fewest payments and exports a record. In Here & Home you start a trip, invite friends with a code, and nobody needs an account, an email or a password. Expenses stay on your phone unless you share a trip, and then only the entries marked as shared leave it.

What a trip tracker has to do

A shared tracker for a trip is different from a household budget. People pay in different currencies, some items are shared by only some of the group, and signal is not always there. It has to cope with all of that and still end with a clear answer to one question: who pays whom?

A checklist for choosing one

Starting a shared trip in Here & Home

  1. Switch on Advanced mode in Settings. Group tools are there, and Simple mode is for solo trips.
  2. Open the Trips tab and start a trip.
  3. Share the invite code with your friends. They join from their own phones.
  4. Everyone converts a price, taps Save, and chooses just me, everyone or specific members.
  5. At the end, Settle up shows who owes whom. The owner marks the trip Settled.

No sign-up, and what is shared

Here & Home has no account. There is no email and no password, so there is nothing to forget and nothing to leak from a sign-up database. In practice this means:

The app is free and supported by ads. Read the privacy details in the app before you share a trip, so you know what is sent.

Reading the balances

Balances are shown from your own perspective. The screen below is a group of twelve: it lists what each person spent, their share, and whether they owe or are owed. Below that, a settlement list gives the payments needed to square everything, and your own lines are highlighted so you can see at a glance what you need to pay.

Twelve people were settled in eleven payments, the most it ever takes: one fewer than the number of people. See splitting unequally for a worked example.
